Thirsk is an old fashioned market town famous for its race course, 15th Century Church and Thomas Lord. Thirsk is also the Darrowby of the late James Herriot, famous vet and author. Thirsk and Sowerby are set in the centre of "Herriot Country" Gateway to the Yorkshire DalesNational Park to the west and the North York MoorsNational Park to the east. Thirsk is also not far from the cities of Ripon, Harrogate and York.

Thirsk itself offers some lovely little shops, restaurants and bars and its famous market takes place on Mondays and Saturdays when the south side of the Market Place has a variety of stalls selling everything from fruit and vegetables, candles, computer games to health food, clothing and hardware.

Train:There are Transpennine Express services to Northallerton, Middlesbrough, Darlington, York and beyond with connections to the East Coast Mainline and Cross Country services at York and Darlington.

Whilst physically on the mainline there are only 4 daily direct services to London courtesy of open access operator Grand Central Railway.
