DIG, York

DIG is York's premier Archaeology based experience offering a unique and enjoyable visit for all the family. Whether you are a keen archaeologist or a young child who wants to dig up the artefacts, DIG has something for all, and you are sure to learn something new.

At DIG, you get to discover only the most exciting archaeological artefacts from the 2000 years of history hidden under the streets of York.

Four excavation pits are filled with Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian finds, so you can grab a trowel and dig up the clues that show how people lived in these times. Look out for our costumed staff during holiday periods - you may even meet a Roman warrior or a Viking lady...

Visitors examine real archaeological finds and work out what they were used for. Look out for the 2000-year-old skulls and the Viking-Age poo!
Our three discovery rooms offer the chance to try out archaeological techniques. The science lab, library and field tent are all 'manned' by our holographic guides, who will help you out with the different activities. At the end of your experience, the story of York and your discoveries are brought together in our 3D cinema - York Revealed.

Because your visit is accompanied by a real archaeologist, our tours are timed. You can just turn up and join a tour or, especially during busy periods, we would suggest that you pre-book to make sure you are guaranteed to join in the fun.

DIG is open every day from 10am - 5pm (last admission 4pm).

DIG is closed on the 24 / 25 /26th December and opening times may vary over the Christmas period so please call or check the website for the latest opening times.

*Please be aware that DIG and tours of Hungate will be closed all day on Septmber 6th

31st December - 10am - 2pm (last tour)                                                                           1st January - 11am - 4pm (last tour)

So if you are looking for a unique experience set in the centre of York for all the family, DIG has something to offer all.
